Announced in the previous post, femininity flashmob successfully took place on August 1.

Aero Show-2015

IMG_2054 Aero Show is an annual event in Novosibirsk. It takes place on the last Sunday of July at Mochische Air Field normally used for amateur flights and trainings. It is about 50 km to the north of the city, at the edge of the settlement called Mochische. You can get there by a short-distance train, by bus or by taxi/personal car. Anyway, on the show day you’d better start as early as possible, as thousands of people visit the event.

Coffee Academy — a different cafe

IMG_1839     Coffee is no longer a problem in Novosibirsk. In fact, there is too much coffee in Siberia these days, and too many places to have a cup of coffee. Besides, there are loads of small ‘stations’ with coffee-to-go. The quality of coffee is about the same everywhere, and the price is more or less similar, too. Is it possible to surprise coffee fans (and I am one of them) at all?

Park ‘Birch Grove’

IMG_1046

‘Birch Grove’, or Birch Park (Berezovaya Roscha) is a park close to the city center but not exactly in the downtown. A hundred years ago it was a city cemetery, and, according to some ‘witnesses’, it is still possible to find occasional human bones there. But it is no more than gossip, as the park exists there for several decades now, and it was rearranged many times. Now it is a big green territory offering various recreation opportunities for the visitors, like bicycle and inline skates rental in summer and skiing, skating and tobogganing opportunities in winter.

Traveler’s Coffee. Not only for travellers.

IMG_1458

There are many places offering good coffee in Novosibirsk, but Traveler’s Coffee has been my personal favorite for many years. And it is definitely not because of coffee only, though it is extremely good here. It is the atmosphere I appreciate, and, however strange it may sound, it is its name. A traveller is not only the one who is on an actual travelin a strange place, but also the one who feels like a traveller staying in his or her home town dreaming of far-away destinations. And Travellers’ Coffee is the right place to feel the atmosphere of remote and exotic places where coffee and tea are grown and where delicious desserts are made.

Initially founded in Novosibirsk by Christopher Tara-Brown, an American, Traveler’s Coffee grew into a chain, which now has cafes in more than 20 Russian cities and abroad, including Ukraine, Kazachstan and even in China!IMG_1457

And everywhere it offers specialty coffee and fine food. A special feature of the chain is that is does not offer any alcohol, so parents should not worry about their teenage children who declare they are going to Traveler’s Coffee to meet friends.

Novosibirsk currently has the chain of 15 cafes, while the new Traveler’s Coffee, located Krasny Prospect 65, is one of the triendiest and definitely is the biggest in the city.

Let’s meet in Traveler’s Coffee for a cup of coffee and speak about travel. Settled?IMG_1459

Celebration of the 120th anniversary of Novosibirsk started!

This weekend our city is celebrating the 120th anniversary. It is a great event for Novosibirsk.

The ‘city birthday’ is always celebrated on the last weekend of June, and this year is no exception, with the only difference that this year the celebration will last three days! It has actually already started today. At 12.00 in the yard of Nikolas Roerich’s Museum we honored one of the former mayors who did a lot for the city and initiated the construction of the metro. Members of his family were invited to ring the so-called ‘bell of peace’. The event was visited by the current mayor, Mr.Gorodetsky, and many other prominent figures, as well as by ordinary citizens.

It was the first event of the celebration, and during the whole weekend there will be plenty of them taking place in all city districts. The celebration will end with a number of great fireworks in several city districts.

If you are in Novosibirsk these days, be sure to visit one of several events. And happy birthday, Novosibirsk!

Vegetarian Cafe OM — the first and the only of this kind in Novosibirsk

I am nearly a vegetarian. ‘Nearly’ means that I sometimes eat fish and seafood, which true vegetarians never do. I never liked meat, and I stopped eating it completely after I took interest in culture and way of life in India and other Eastern countries and especially after I bought a book on the Indian cuisine and learned to cook some traditional Indian dishes. But from time to time I have to eat out or want to meet with friends or colleagues somewhere in a nice place, and I lacked a cafe or a reatsurant where smoking is not allowed and where there is a good choice of vegetarian dishes. Until the last spring there was no such place in our city, and like all vegetarians in Novosibirsk I was very happy when cafe OM was opened.
