Novosibirsk: Healthy and fit in Novosibirsk

Winter Fun in Novosibirsk. Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is one of the everlasting favourites here in Siberia. Everyone who is interested in sports like skiing and biathlon can name a couple of famous athletes born, living and/or training in Novosibirsk. There are a couple of honoured specialized skiing schools and clubs for professionals; and each winter, December to March, a number of high-level competitions, marathons and other events take place here, including 30-km and even 60-km marathons.

Winter Fun in Novosibirsk. Ice Skating.

Siberia is one of the places associated with cold, frosts, everlasting and never-melting snow. Shortly: it is associated with WINTER. And winter is associated not just with staying indoors and drinking hot or long drinks, but, first of all, with outdoor winter fun.

In this post and so forth I’m starting to share with my subscribers what fun you can have in Novosibirsk in winter. Let’s start with ice-skating.

Vegetarian/vegan in Novosibirsk. No problem!

Vegetarian life-style is getting more and more common and trendy, and Novosibirsk is not an exception. There is a common disbelief that one just won’t survive in Siberia as a vegetarian/vegan, especially in winter, and that there’s basically nothing to eat here other than meat. But as an experienced vegetarian (7 years) I know perfectly well how wrong these assumptions are. In this post I offer you a short ‘vegetarian/vegan guide’ of Novosibirsk.

For many long years aquapark was one of the most anticipated projects in Novosibirsk. Numerous design projects replaced each other; the location was changed many times. Finally all details were settled and coordinated, and a huge construction started several years ago to be finished in 2016. Now Aquaworld (AquaMir) is the largest in the country and one of the ten largest in the world.

Visit a Russian banya, feel like a new man!

For some the notion of ‘banya’ sounds totally unfamiliar, while others think it is just a Russian word for a sauna. However, banya and sauna are two different things. Besides, for Russians a banya is a symbol of health, purification, joy of body and soul.

Park ‘Birch Grove’

‘Birch Grove’, or Birch Park (Berezovaya Roscha) is a park close to the city center but not exactly in the downtown. A hundred years ago it was a city cemetery, and, according to some ‘witnesses’, it is still possible to find occasional human bones there. But it is no more than gossip, as the park exists there for several decades now, and it was rearranged many times. Now it is a big green territory offering various recreation opportunities for the visitors, like bicycle and inline skates rental in summer and skiing, skating and tobogganing opportunities in winter.

Zaeltsovsky Park

If you are tired of the ‘stone jungles’, it’s the right time to go to a park for some fresh air. In a city so crowded with cars as Novosibirsk it is vital. The city center is not especially rich in parks, but the outskirts offer wonderful opportunities, besides, they are easily accessible by public transportation.

Don’t know what to do on a spare day? Go to a Russian Banya!

Different kinds of hot and cold baths, also thermal baths, are widespread all over the world. Many countries and places can boast of such kind of pleasure, but a Russian banya is one of the most extreme ones, this is admitted by millions of admirers.

So if you have a spare day or just several spare hours in Novosibirsk, a visit to a typical Russian banya can be a perfect variant of time-spending, besides, it will do you a lot of good.
