Novosibirsk: Novosibirsk for kids

Zaeltsovsky Park

If you are tired of the ‘stone jungles’, it’s the right time to go to a park for some fresh air. In a city so crowded with cars as Novosibirsk it is vital. Open-air Railway Museum in Novosibirsk

Railway is very important for Novosibirsk. In fact, Novosibirsk appeared only thanks to the railway.  In 1891 the Tsar Alexander III and his government resolved to build the Transsiberian Railway and a group of engineers was sent to Siberia to find the best position for the railway bridge over the river Ob along with the overall layout of the Transsiberian. At that time there was just a huge forest where Novosibirsk is located now, and a couple of small villages here and there. Besides, 30 km to the north of the current center of Novosibirsk there was a big town Kolyvan, and the initial plan was to build the bridge there, but that idea was not approved by the engineers. In 1896 the bridge was put into operation. All aspects of life in Novosibirsk, economic and social, have been driven by railway ever since.

It was home to 82 species of animals and was well visited, though its general condition was rather poor. The cages were small and uncomfortable and visitors had difficulties moving around. Everyone understood that the new premises was urgently required, but the construction did not start until 1983. The huge territory is located amidst the pine forest ensuring nature-similar conditions for the residents.
