Forgotten Airport

If you love everything, which is off-the-beaten track, mysterious and obsolete, you will surely love the deserted airport Severny (northern). It was built in 1929 and till 1957 it was the only airport in Novosibirsk, but air traffic was not too intensive at that time, besides, the city was not that big, even though it was growing very fast. Though the airport was (and still it) at the distance of only 5 km from the downtown, it didn’t really disturb the city life.

The airport served such planes as An-2An-24An-26An-30, and Let-410.

In 1957 the large Tolmachevo Airport was built at good distance from the city. It was equipped much better right from the start, so it was much more suitable for long-distance and even international flights. Now Tolmachevo is a big hub serving lots of domestic and international flights.

Severny Airport continued operating; however, it only served short-distance local flights. There was a regular shuttle bus between the two airports.

In the 90ies, when the whole country and its economy were in dramatic decline, Severny Airport suffered greatly, the same as the whole local air traffic. Anyway, the airport managed to survive till 2011, when it announced itself as bankrupt and was closed. Now the airport building is included into the list of architectural monuments, so it’s still there, but the airfield is used by driving schools for trainings, drift shows, as well as for some open-airs.

There are plans to develop the former field and to turn it into a large residential quarter, however, the authorities promise to keep the former airport building.

The surrounding residential area is peaceful, represented by Stalin-era blocks of flats. The street starting there is also called ‘Airport’.

If you are eager to see the place, it’s pretty easy to get there. Take the metro to Zaeltsovskaya Station (end of line) and take Trolleybus line 5, or Minibus line 399, follow to the end of line. If you like walking, just walk along Krasny Prospect to its end, walk up the hill, and you are there! From Zaeltsovskaya metro station you can reach the location within around 30 minutes.
