The Zoo in Novosibirsk is one of the largest in Russia and one of the main city sights. It history started in 1933, when a small activity center for children was organized, where schoolchildren were suppose to learn about animals and to take care of them. In 1950 a real zoo was organized not far from the the place where the Central Market is no situated. The Zoo had 82 species of animals and was well visited, though its general condition was rather poor. The cages were small and uncomfortable for animals and birds, and visitors had difficulties moving around, too. Everyone understood that the new premises was urgently required, but the construction did not start until 1983. It was resolved to arrange the new zoo in the pine and birch forest in the outskirts of the city. The territory was really huge, which ensured comfortable and nature-similar conditions for its residents. In 2005 the last animals and the administrative staff were relocated and the zoo became one of the most favorite places where everyone could easily spend the whole wonderful day amidst green trees.
This museum is an open-air department of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography, located 4 km away from Academgorodok, in a beautiful place surrounded by hills. Its floor area is 46.5 hectares. The museum is accessible by car, bus or bicycle. Normally a visit should be booked and is only possible in a group, but we visited it without a booking, while we were riding bicycles there.
Railway is very important for Novosibirsk. In fact, Novosibirsk appeared thanks to the railway. In 1891 the Tsar Alexander III and his government decided to build the Transsiberian Railway and a group of engineers was sent to Siberia to find the best place for the railway bridge over the river Ob. At that time there was just a huge forest where Novosibirsk is located now, and a couple of small villages on the left side of the river. Besides, 30 km to the north of the current center of Novosibirsk there was a big town Kolyvan, and the initial plan was to build the bridge there, but the engineers found out that it was not a good idea, and another place was chosen, and in 1896 the bridge was put into operation. Since then the development of Novosibirsk has been driven by the railway.
The Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Academgorodok (academic town) of Novosibirsk is not a widely known one , but this fact makes it even more interesting.
Of all museums in Novosibirsk the museum of birch bark objects is my favorite and it is a unique place.
From Wikipedia (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Музей_«Сибирская_береста») and from the museum website (http://museum-beresta.ru/) we learn that this museum is the only one of that kind in the world. The museum website is in Russian only, but you can look at the pictures anyway.
